I want to tell you about Irina…
Irina was born with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance and posture. Many who suffer from this often lose their ability to conduct basic motor functions, like walking, if ever they were fortunate enough to develop them.
One chief benefit Irina, and so many others just like her, have found in therapeutic horseback riding is how the horse’s gait mirrors that of a human’s. This has profound benefits as it works the muscles and joints of the rider while at the same time gently challenges the parts of the brain that are effected by Cerebral Palsy thousands of times over the course of an hourlong lesson. As a result of this continuous challenge, the brain and body grow stronger together, helping riders like Irina maintain their independence.
After much growth by means of riding at HorseSense, Irina now loves to help others overcome their own neurological challenges by volunteering. Together, we help many other riders discover and maintain their independence in the face of their unique challenges.
